Singapore (/ˈsɪŋɡəpɔr/), officially the Republic of Singapore, and often referred to as the Lion City, the Garden
City, and the Red Dot, is a leading global city-state and island country in Southeast Asia. Singapore's territory
consists of the diamond-shaped main island and more than 60 significantly
smaller islets.
In 1826
it became part of the UK. It became independent from Britain in 1963.

distinctive seasons.
Since Singapore is a small island with a high
population density, the number of private cars on the road is restricted so as to curb pollution and congestion.

Buddhism is the most widely practised
religion in Singapore. The next-most practised religion is Christianity, followed by Islam, Taoism, and Hinduism. 17% of the population did not have a religious affiliation.

The Merlion
The Merlion is the national personification of
Singapore. The Merlion is
possibly a creature in western heraldry that depicts a creature with a lion's head and a body of a
fish.
Its name
combines "mer" meaning the sea and "lion". The fish body represents Singapore's origin as
a fishing village when it was called Temasek, which means "sea town". The lion head represents Singapore's
original name Singapura meaning "lion city".

The Singapore
Flyer is a giant Ferris wheel in Singapore.
Described by its operators as an observation wheel, it
opened in 2008. It has 28 air-conditioned capsules, each able to accommodate 28
passengers.
National Orchid Garden
The National Orchid Garden, located within
the Singapore Botanic Gardens, was opened on 20 October 1995. The National
Orchid Garden is located in the Central Core of the gardens.
The Garden is located on the highest hill in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Providing a place for 60,000 orchid plants - consisting of 1000 species and more than
2,000 hybrids - is the three hectares of carefully landscaped slopes.
Gardens by the Bay
Gardens by the Bay is in
central Singapore. The park consists of three waterfront gardens: Bay South Garden, Bay
East Garden and Bay Central Garden. The largest of the three gardens is Bay
South Garden.

by the Bay is an integral part of a strategy by the Singapore government to transform
Singapore from a "Garden City" to a "City in a Garden". The
stated aim is to raise the quality of life by enhancing greenery and flora in
the city.
Singapore Zoo
The Singapore Zoo formerly
known as the Singapore Zoological Gardens and commonly known locally as the Mandai Zoo. The zoo opened on 27 June 1973. There are about 315
species of animal in the zoo, of which some 16 percent are considered
threatened species. The zoo attracts about 1.6 million visitors each year.
Night Safari
The Night Safari is the world's first nocturnal zoo (Nocturnality is an animal behavior characterized
by activity during the night and sleeping during the day) and is one of the most popular tourist
attractions in Singapore.
The
concept of a nocturnal park in Singapore was suggested in the 1980s. The Night
Safari was officially opened on 26 May 1994.
The Night
Safari currently houses over 2,500 animals representing over 130 species, of which 38% are threatened species.
