Means of Communication

What does it mean? Means of communication. It is the way of exchanging information. We can communicate with other people in many different ways. The Internet, phones, telegraph, cell phones, radio, television are all the means of communication.
To begin with I’d like to point out that means of communication have changed greatly. When we think of it we cannot understand how people who lived 50 years ago were able to keep in touch. Nowadays we cannot imagine human contact without modern technology devices such as mobile phones, smartphones, laptops and so on.
Newspapers, though don’t react to events as quickly as TV does. TV has become the primary source of news for millions of people around the world. Still many people prefer to get the news on the radio.
Modern means of communication have made the distance between people unimportant.
Late in the nineteenth century, communication facilities were added by a new invention — telephone. In the USA its use expanded slowly and by 1900 the American Telephone and Telegraph Company controlled 855,000 telephones.
After 1900, telephone installations extended much more rapidly.
Mobile phones are portable and let us contact others wherever they and we are. Furthermore, mobile phones offer the possibility of texting. Text messaging is the most convenient and the cheapest form of communication when we need to pass a quick note containing only a few words.
Emails have replaced letters and postcards almost completely. People prefer emails, which are quicker to write and send and more sure to reach the addressee.
Video conferences are often used by business people and scientists and they don’t need to travel to remote places.
To keep in touch with our families and friends that live abroad we use the Internet and such programs as Skype or Messenger, we use video chats or instant messaging.
A lot of people especially teenagers communicate in social networks such as vkontacte, facebook, twitter, odnoklasniki.

We can give and get a lot of information so it is very difficult to know what is important and what isn’t. So can you imagine one moment without television, post office, internet, radio? It seems us boring because we can’t imagine our live without means of communication. In ancient times they communicate to each other sending massages by means of messengers. We can’t speak about means of communication without mentioning computers. Nowdays it is too difficult to imagine our live without computers. They appeared in 20th century and has become a very important part in our live. They are very useful. I can say that we can use computer instead of TV, newspapers, magazine, and even telephone.
Newspapers
There are newspapers for all walks of life – professionals, business people, children and teenagers, men and women, film, sports and music fans, to name just a few. Some publish serious articles on politics, economy and finance, others aim to entertain their readers. Many newspapers express a political opinion or try to introduce new ideas.

Newspapers in UK
Fleet Street in London used to be the home of most national  daily and Sunday newspapers and that is why people often say “Fleet Street” to mean “the press” even now. In Britain there are 12 national daily newspapers. Daily newspapers are published on every day of the week except Sunday. There is another branch of the British press – the local newspapers.
Today there are five nationwide daily papers in Britain:  The Times, the Daily Telegraph, the Guardian, the  Independent and the Financial Times.
In Great Britain there are no official government newspapers. The government doesn’t exercise any official control over the newspaper industry.

Newspapers in USA
The USA has only one national  newspaper. USA Today, which offers news of general interest. The rest are local. That is probably because of the great size of the country.
A few newspapers from large cities, such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune are of national interest
There are also many papers in foreign languages for people from various ethnic backgrounds.
The US press plays an important part in the business of government.
