New York

There are a lot of big and beautiful cities in the USA. The outstanding one is New York. New York with its skyscrapers, noisy streets and the crazy pulse of supercity is unlike Washington with its long wide avenues, shady streets, low buildings and crowds of governmental officials. New York is not an old city. In 1609 Henry Hudson  - an English explorer, who worked for the Dutch East-Indian company, founded the town at the mouth of river that later got his name (the Hudson river). As it was a Dutch colony the first name of the town was New Amsterdam. But in 1664 the settlement was bought (captured) by the Duke of York and became a British colony and was renamed New York in honour of the Duke. Nowadays New York is the biggest city and seaport in the country. It is considered to be a national leader in business, finance, manufacturing, industry, fashion and arts. Its total area is about 900 square km and its population is about 16 million people. The most well-known nickname of New York is "The Big Apple" but unfortunately we do not know the origin of this nickname. (New York became known as ''The Big Apple'' thanks to the apple orchards planted by Dutch governor). New York is inhabited by people of almost all nationalities. 13 of every 100 people in New York were born in another country. More than 80 languages are spoken throughout the neighbourhoods and streets of the city and there are places where English is hardly spoken. Most famous ethnic neighbourhoods are Harlem (Negro Chetto), Chinese neighbourhood known as Chinetown and naneighbourhood, called ''Little Odesa'' inhabited by people who came from Russia and Sowet Union. Because of its multinational and multi-racial population New York is sometimes called ''Modern Babylon'' or ''Melting Pot'' or ''Salad Boul''.
Modern New York consists of five main parts or boroughs: Manhatten, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Richmond and Queens. Manhatten is a historical, financial, administrative centre of the city. Manhatten is divided into three part: downtown, midtown, uptown. In 1626 it was bought from the Indians for handfull of trinkets that cost twenty-four dollars. Later the Indians named the island ''Manhatten'' which is one of Indians languages mean ''They cheated us''. As Manhatten is an island numerous bridges connect it with other boroughs. The most famous bridge is 449 m long Brooklyn Bridge which was opened for the public 1888 and it was first steel suspension bridge in the world. Among other famous bridge there are Triborough Bridge which connects Manhatten with both Queens and the Bronx and George Washingtin Bridge one of the world's largest bridge. There are many places of interest in New York and many famous streets. Of
course most famous sight in New York is the Statue of Liberty. It is a symbol of not only New York but of the USA.

Along with the Statue of Liberty skyscrapers are another symbol of New York. There are many skyscrapers in New York but most famous are 102 stored. The Empire State building which is now the tallest building in the USA (after the destruction of World Trade Centre(110 stored building with 2 tower)). He was built in 1934 during the Great Depression and it is a symbol of the economy power of the USA. There is a viewing ground on the top and tourist can enjoy the wonderful view of the city from this viewing spot. Another famous skyscraper is Rockefeller Center. It is a group on 15 skyscrapers, including 70-stored RCA (Radio Corporation of America) building which houses Radiocity Music Hall. Another world famous place in New York is United Nations Head  quarters which occupy a six-block area on the East River. At the front of the building you can see 166 flags for the 166 member nations. There are many famous streets in New York and one of the most famous is Wall Street. It is the financial centre of the USA and even the most important banking centre in the world. New York Stock Exchange the Bank of New York and offices of biggest companies are situated here. The name of the street derives from the times when a wall was build here in order to protect the settlers from the Indians. The wall was destroyed but  the name has remained. In Broadway street many theatres are located. In fact Broadway is the symbol of American theatre as Hollywood is of American cinema. One part of Broadway is sometimes called the Great Unite. Way because the advertisements are so bright in Broadway that they turn night into day. Such streets as Park Avenue, the Fifth Avenue, the Seventh Avenue are synonyms for wealth entertainment and advertising. There are many fashionable shops, hotels and clubs in these streets. Here I must say that New York is a city of contrasts. In this richest city of the world there are jobless people who live in boxes. That's why some call New York ''A poem in stone and steel'' while others call it ''A soulless monster'' In Times Square which New Yorkers call the cross Christmas tree by a tradition stand and it is in Times Square where people of New York traditionally go to see the New Year in. Millions gather in Times Square on the New Year Eve to see a brightly lit ball which descends from the roof of one of the skyscrapers and when the ball reaches the ground it means that New York has already come. World famous Central Park is situated in the Fifth Avenue. It occupies 843 acres of land. With grassy meadows, fountains, lakes and sculptor the park is popular place for having a rest after hard working day. There is also a theatre, a zoo, two ice-skating rinks and a swimming pool in the Central Park. New York is rich in museums and of course the most famous is Metropolitan Museum of Art which is one of the world's leading art museums. It has exhibits from different historical periods from prehistoric times to present day. It also has the biggest in the world collection of American art. The museum of Modern Art has a world class collection of paintings and sculptors from the early impressionists to present day. Guggenheim Museum which is housed in a beautiful spiral building holds one of the best collection of Modern Art (paintings, sculpture and graphic arts): Frick Museum of Art contains many of the finest works of European masters: Whitney Museum of Art houses the largest collection of the 20th century art. The Museum of the city of New York, American Museum of Natural History. There is also Fire Museum which houses fire
fighting machines of different periods from old fire-engines. There are many concert halls in New York. Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts includes Philarmonic Hall, New York State Theatre, Metropolitan Opera, Library and Museum of the Performing Arts. Medison Square Garden Centre is an entertainment, convention and office complex which has several facilities including the 20000 secrets. Madison Square Garden is a show place and a stadium. Carnegie Hall presents the world's great orchestras and soloists.
